Definition

Implicit (unconscious) biases are “attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner.” (Cheryl Staats, “Understanding Implicit Bias What Educators Should Know,” American Educator 39, no. 4 (Winter 2015-2016): 29–33)

Project Implicit: Implicit Association Test (IAT) (Harvard University)

  • The IAT measures attitudes and beliefs that people may be unwilling or unable to report. IATs can be a useful tool in identifying potential biases, attitudes and associations, but these tests alone should not be expected to overcome the impact of biases of the test taker.
