Critical conversations in the community

CSHA is pleased to announce a new, safe virtual space for important conversations. CSHA Convos are intended to be a safe place where some of the most-needed conversations can happen … a place for insights, knowledge and awareness. CSHA hopes to elevate the unique and upcoming voices in the field, creating the opportunity for learning from the lived experiences of professionals who are navigating through these challenging times.

CSHA Convos are live events (they will not be recorded) and are available to the entire community at no charge.

These sessions were developed by a CSHA working group consisting of Raquel Narain, CSHA board chair; Anna Vagin, chair of the Content Advisory Committee, Amalia Hernandez, chair of the Board Diversity & Inclusion Committee; and CSHA member Katie Gore. The team has identified a robust series of participants.

Featuring panelists from across the CSHA community, each conversation will be lightly moderated and include audience Q&A for an interactive discussion. In addition, a CSHA representative will be present at each conversation to respond to audience questions and ensure feedback informs the association’s ongoing continuous improvement agenda.

It’s Hard To Be What I Can’t See: Creating More inclusivity In Our Field
Thursday, August 13, 5-6:30 PST
This kickoff conversation will broadly explore the challenges and barriers faced by SLP and AuD professionals. Panelists will share their personal stories and discuss how their gender, race, disability and native language have played a role as they navigate their careers. This conversation will feature the sharing of personal experiences in order to build understanding and support, and address how to create a more inclusive profession.

Race, Communication and Professionalism: Navigating Our Field as a BIPOC Clinician
Thursday, September 10, 5-6:30 PST
This Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) panel will share their personal experiences, from graduate training to professional leadership, in a historically homogeneous field. This conversation will address the implicit biases and covert discriminatory practices that exist in our field and impact both clinicians and consumers.

Queen Bees and CCCs: Real Talk About the Culture in Our Field
Thursday, October 8, 5-6:30 PST
This conversation will explore a culture of bullying that many in our field experience in graduate training, the workplace and administrative settings. A diverse panel with different years of seniority and authority will share personal experiences and discuss possibilities for cultural change in our field.

Navigating Generational Culture Differences
Thursday, November 12, 5-6:30 PST
This conversation will explore the challenges and opportunities presented by generational diversity in the SLP/AuD field. Panelists representing diverse generational viewpoints will reflect on the era-specific struggles, lessons and values that influenced their careers, both for better and for worse. The conversation will conclude by focusing on the future: how can we use knowledge of our past to chart an intentional, positive course for the future?

Best Practices as a Foundation for CSHA’s Future
Thursday, December 10 5-6:30 PST CHANGED TO FEBRUARY 11, 2021
The last CSHA Convo of 2020 will reflect on learnings from the four prior discussions and explore CSHA’s role in creating and supporting change. Significant efforts by the association over the last few years to embrace evidence-based nonprofit best practices have created the space and structure for continued improvement. Panelists from CSHA leadership will share their insights and perspectives within the context of the previous CSHA Convos. Time will be set aside for audience Q&A to encourage dialogue and a collaborative growth path for our profession and our association.
